Two of the most hyped and least understood tools in the sport. What they actually do, what's realistic, and the metabolic risks that rarely make it into the sales pitch.
Growth hormone gets talked about like a magic switch. It isn't. It's a powerful, slow-acting, expensive tool with real effects and real downsides, and understanding both sides is the difference between using it as an intelligent adult and getting sold a fantasy. Let's take the hype out of it.
Growth hormone (GH) is a peptide hormone released by your pituitary gland in pulses, mostly at night. A large part of what people attribute to GH is actually downstream: GH signals the liver (and other tissues) to produce IGF-1, insulin-like growth factor 1, which is the mediator of much of the tissue-building and repair activity. So when people talk about "running GH," what they're really chasing is a sustained elevation in IGF-1 and GH's own direct effects on fat metabolism.
Some people pursue this with GH directly; others use secretagogues (peptides or oral compounds like the ghrelin mimetics profiled in the compound library) that prompt the body to release more of its own GH. The mechanisms differ, but the metabolic consequences overlap.
Realistic, generally accepted effects include improved body composition over long time horizons (GH is more of a slow recomposition tool than a mass builder), enhanced fat metabolism, better skin and connective-tissue quality, improved sleep for some, and a sense of quicker recovery. Emphasis on slow: GH works on the scale of many months, not weeks. Anyone promising dramatic short-term muscle from GH alone is selling something.
What isn't realistic: the idea that GH is "safe because it's natural." It's a potent hormone, and pushing it well above physiological levels has consequences that show up in your bloodwork and, eventually, your body.
GH and IGF-1 can be legitimate tools in the right context, but they are the opposite of a free lunch, the headline benefit (growth and repair) and the headline risk (metabolic dysfunction) come from the exact same mechanism. That trade-off has to be managed with bloodwork and medical oversight, not vibes. If you want that handled properly as part of a bigger picture, that's what coaching is for.
